Before the emergence of Nicki Minaj, a certain Lil Kim, often referred to as the Queen of Rap or the Hip-Hop Goddess, was voted the best female rapper of all time. The Brooklyn, New York native, discovered by fellow New York rapper, The Notorious BIG, is best known for songs like “No Time,” “Big Momma Thang” and “Not Tonight (Ladies Night).”
In her time, and to some extent until today, LilKim was also known for her sexually provocative fashion sense which influenced those who followed her. Read on to learn more about his early life and career.
Lil Kim was born Kimberly Denise Jones on July 11, 1974 in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, New York. She is the second of her parents’ two children. Ruby and Linwood Jones, who raised her together until they separated when she was around 9 years old. Ms Jones was subsequently raised by her estranged father, Marine, until the two broke down and she was kicked out of their home.
Around this time, Kim, who had attended Queen of All Saints Elementary School in Brooklyn, dropped out of high school. She had first attended Sarah J. Hale Vocational High School before transferring to Brooklyn College Academy.
While living on the streets, Kim began to focus on building a career in rap music. She was able to do this thanks to her relationship with rapper The Notorious BIG who was causing a stir at the time. Around the age of 19, she stopped calling herself by her birth name and adopted the nickname Lil Kim as she united with other up-and-coming artists to form the rap group Junior MAFIA. The band, with the help of BIG who wrote most of their music, released their debut album in 1995, titled Conspiracy.
The RIAA-certified Junior MAFIA gold album went on to propel Lil Kim to launch a solo rap career. In November 1996, after creating a buzz around her by featuring many top R&B songs, she released her very first solo album titled Hard Core. The album’s commercial success propelled her to new heights, as she launched her own record label and began working as a model.
In 2000, she released her second album titled TheNotorious Kim, which debuted at number 4 on the Billboard 200 and sold 229,000 copies in its first week of release. His third album, La Bella Mafia, released in March 2003, also enjoyed considerable success as it debuted at number 5 on the Billboard 200 and sold 166,000 copies in its first week.
In 2005, Lil Kim found herself on the receiving end of a one-year prison sentence after being convicted of three counts of conspiracy and one count of perjury following a shooting in 2001. While at the Federal Detention Center in Philadelphia, Lil Kim ensured she would always be hot on the rap music scene by scheduling the release of her fourth album during her time behind bars. The album, titled The Naked Truth, debuted at number 6 and sold 109,000 copies in its first week. Since that time, due to contractual obligations and court orders, Kim has been unable to release any further albums, although she has released a number of mixtapes.
There are conflicting reports about the net worth of Lil Kim, which is said to cost $18 million. The multi-platinum-selling rapper is worth it, but in 2018 she filed for Chapter 13 bankruptcy in New Jersey. She allegedly owed the government, banks and lawyers more than $4 million.
Over the past few years, every time Lil Kim has stepped out in public, she always looks different than the last time she was seen, which is due to the fact that she’s gone under the knife multiple times. The Magic Stick rapper looks like she’s worked on her jawline, eyes, cheeks, nose and skin, making her nearly unrecognizable from the moment she stepped onto the scene.
In her defence, however, Ms Jones was forced to work on her nose after it was repeatedly broken by a former boyfriend.
In June 2014, Lil Kim gave birth to her first child, a daughter named Royal Reign. The baby was born out of her relationship with Honduran-born New York rapper Mr. Papers. The couple have since ended their relationship and have reportedly been embroiled in a custody battle over their daughter.
Lil Kim is 4ft 11in (149cm) tall and weighs 55kg (121lb). Her body measures 36-26-34.
She starred in acting, appearing herself or playing a role. She starred in several films, including She’s All That (1999), Gang of Roses (2003) and Superhero Movie (2008).
