The Pioneer Womans Pretzel Dogs Recipe Features Frozen Dinner Rolls

Some nights, you want dinner to just be fun. And The Pioneer Woman (a.k.a. Ree Drummond) has just the recipe for when the craving for something fun arises. Her pretzel dogs are not only a blast to eat, but they’re super simple to make. In fact, with some strategic planning, you can have dinner on the table in about 20 minutes because all the ingredients are store-bought staples.

“These are so incredible because I use frozen bread rolls,” Drummond said in a recent Instagram video she made in collaboration with Food Network. The strategic planning comes in here — you have to allow the dinner rolls to thaw completely and rise at room temperature, which can take about three hours. But, as long as you bake thawing into your daily plans, dinner will come together in a snap. After letting the rolls thaw and rise, roll each ball out into a long snake. Then, you wrap that snake around each of your uncooked hot dogs.

“This is actually something you can involve the kids with, too,” Drummond said. “You can have them roll the dough out and turn it into an assembly line, and it makes it a lot [faster].”

Once you have your dogs wrapped up tight, it’s time to cook. To turn these regular bread dough dogs into pretzel dogs, Drummond adds a bit of baking soda to a pot of boiling water before boiling the dogs for about 30 seconds each. The dough will puff up a bit, and that’s when you know it’s time to take them out of the water.

Finally, place your dogs on a sheet pan, brush them each with a bit of melted butter, and sprinkle some flaky salt on them before tossing them into the oven to brown up. “If someone ever asks me if I want my pretzel salted, the answer is always, always, yes,” Drummond said. “Anything you would serve with a hot dog, you can serve with these pretzel dogs,” she continued. Drummond likes to eat her dogs with a few of her homemade refrigerator pickles and her maple mustard (both recipes are available in her new cookbook Dinner’s Ready!).

So the next time you’re craving a fun dinner, give Drummond’s pretzel dogs a try. Or take them to your next tailgate session or holiday gathering to bring a bit of whimsy to the party.
