Yorktown Swimming Pool to Open Saturday

YORKTOWN, N.Y. - With temperatures forecasted to soar into the 80s for the Memorial Day weekend, residents in Yorktown will have an opportunity to cool off outdoors for the first time this year.

Junior Lake Pool at Memorial Park, which features a popular slide, will be open  from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday to Monday. The pool will be open every day through Aug. 17, starting June 4.

"We'd like to get big crowds on opening weekend," said Yorktown Parks and Recreation Superintendent Brian Gray. "With the weather we've been having, I'm not sure if swimming will be on people's minds this weekend, but we're ready for them."

Yorktown's other public pool, Brian J. Slavin Aquatic Facility at Shrub Oak Park, which includes an interactive water park, doesn't open until June 9 but it remains open through Labor Day.

Work on the decking of the main pool and diving pool at Shrub Oak, which cost about $16,000, currently has begun and is expected to be completed in a few weeks.

"Having a pool in the Northeast is tough," Gray said. "Maintaining a pool in the Northeast is a struggle. Both our pools are very well attended and each pool has its own unique features."

Pool passes can be obtained at the Parks and Recreation Administration Building at Sparkle Lake weekdays from 9-11 a.m. and 1-4 p.m. May 7 through July 13 with extended hours from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursdays. The office also is open from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. Proof of residency is required.
